How the U.S. Executive Orders Affect Local Agencies’ Drone Laws

Two new U.S. Executive Orders were signed, declaring that federal agencies, like the FAA, must update their regulations fast.

On June 6, 2025, U.S. President Trump signed two Executive Orders that directly affect unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), also known as drones, and their use at the local government level. These Orders aim to ensure continued American leadership in the development of drones, including their use to assist local agencies in enforcement and response efforts.

How do the new U.S. Orders affect your Public Agency's Drone Laws?

For local government code enforcement departments, this means:

  • You may soon be expected or encouraged to adopt U.S.-made drones for tasks like property inspections, abatements, or surveillance.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is ordered to expand drone operations by enabling routine “Beyond Visual Line of Sight” (BVLOS) drone operations for public safety missions, expanding the types of flights agencies can engage in.
  • Review and issuance of UAS waivers will be expedited.
  • The FAA plans to publish an updated roadmap for the integration of UAS into the National Airspace System, which will create clarity on permissible flight operations; and,
  • Local agencies may have the opportunity to be involved in pilot programs or need to align with federal procurement and airspace integration standards.

You may soon be expected or encouraged to adopt U.S.-made drones for tasks like property inspections, abatements, or surveillance.
